Many mile trail system
About: I just had my first introduction to this trail system while participating in the Big Bend Ultra. I didn’t do the 50 mile but did do the 10K. It was an extremely fun and satisfying run. I learned that this is a fantastic trail system for biking.
The trail system is vast, and you could probably spend a long vacation exploring the system. The abbreviated portion I got to see contained beauty, history and intrigue.
The 10K path of the trail system:
- We started running north on Buena Suerte Trail
- We rounded back on the Rock Quarry Trail
- And veered off on the Dog Cholia Trail
The start and finish was at the Barton Warnock visitor center for Big Bend Ranch State Park.

There is another trail by the Rock Quarry Trail called the Crystal Trail. Someone told me of a crystal mountain where there is a hill of quartz that is quite stunning. I am not sure if it is on that trail or perhaps nearby a trail I was on. More research is needed for this one. I’ll update as I find out more.
There is one thing for certain, I am going to buy a good trail bike and come back here and do the WHOLE thing.
Pros: Vast and lots too explore. Seems like the best place to bring a mountain bike and explore the whole system. You can make it as short or as long as you want.
Cons: I don’t know, I was running the whole time.
Tips: More to come when I can truly explore this system while not on a run.
The state park offers great maps online.
